This is a project which brings together artists from Ireland and Australia to investigate the evolving nature of national identity for a country’s emigrated population. WAKE was first performed as part of Limerick City of Culture’s programme 2014. HOME is currently being developed including a research residency in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart in June 2015. This residency involved interviews with many Irish emigrants about their experience of leaving and what it means to perceive changes to the Irish social system from a distance. Through these companion plays we will investigate the tensions between private and public commemoration, the subtleties in a changing view of home and family, and the evolution of Ireland’s origin stories.
The work also looks at experimental forms of traditional Irish music including a workshop with Uilleann piper Matthew Horsley.
WAKE // HOME is large in ambition and scale. It encompasses classic and contemporary source materials, moulding complimentary narratives in separate site-specific settings. The audience will experience an intimate journey, guided by close and personal performances that are equal parts haunting and joyful.
